The Board of Directors of the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society:

Graham Pike - President

Graham Pike is Dean of International Education at Vancouver Island University, where he has responsibility for VIU’s international programs and services for 1700 international students. Originally from the UK, he moved with his family to Canada in 1992. During his career, which has been dedicated towards the promotion of global awareness and social justice through public education, he has held positions as a professor of education and an administrator at the University of York (UK), the University of Toronto and the University of Prince Edward Island. He has also worked as an education consultant in more than 20 countries and directed many projects in partnership with United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations, business corporations, and charitable foundations. His publications on global and international education are used by teachers and teacher educators in many countries and have been translated into eight languages. He served as a Board member of the Association for Newcomers to Canada in Charlottetown, PEI and he is delighted to be able to play a similar role at the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society.

Paul Winn - Vice-President

Mindy Kailly - Treasurer

Mindy was born and raised on Vancouver Island.  She’s lived in Lake Cowichan, Duncan, Victoria, Nanaimo and Cassidy and currently resides in Yellow Point.  Mindy is married with two children.  She enjoys travelling, walking and reading.

Mindy attended UVIC and Malaspina College (now VIU) and has her Certified General Accountants designation.  She’s worked in Duncan for most of her career in public practice and as Controller and Treasurer of a large credit union.  Mindy is currently the VP, Finance and Treasury at Coastal Community Credit Union.   Coastal is the largest credit union based on Vancouver Island.

Maureen Shakespeare - Secretary

Maureen is a first generation Canadian Citizen. She has worked for the Federal Government Department of Citizenship and Immigration in various capacities and locations since 1981. She is currently on leave from her job. During her career, Maureen has been dedicated to raising the awareness and understanding of the federal citizenship and immigration program. Maureen has lived, worked and travelled in other countries. She has used those experiences and perceptions to ensure that immigration and diversity are understood, accepted and respected in the work place and community. Maureen enjoys learning and sharing her knowledge with others. Maureen is proud to continue to be involved with the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society as a Board Member.

Peter Sikora - Member at Large

Peter is an HR Consultant, holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Alberta and is a Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR). Peter has extensive Human Resources experience in both the Public and Private sectors and has worked as an HR professional for a number of organizations including work: in a Hospital, with the University of Alberta, in the Oil Industry and many years in Municipal Government. His HR work has focused on employee and labour relations, compensation, collective bargaining, job evaluation, and recruitment and retention.

Wendy Young - Member at Large

Wendy is the Director of Finance at Vancouver Island University, holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University and is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA).  Wendy began her career as an auditor with KPMG and then worked in various financial capacities within Regional and Municipal Government before moving into Post-Secondary.  Wendy loves being part of the Nanaimo community and is excited to now be part of CVIMS.

Gerald (Gerry) M. Laporte - MEng, PEng, cfc - Member at Large

Gerry Laporte, a resident of Nanaimo, is a retired Canadian Naval Officer, with over 35 years experience in a wide range of roles and responsibilities.  A graduate in Electrical Engineering from Carleton University and Masters of Engineering from the Royal Military College, Gerry comes with extensive leadership experience in various roles in both government and non-government agencies in addition to major project management.  Since retiring, Gerry has served on a number of boards and is very active with fund raising for charities.  He's currently involved with a private refugee sponsorship committee that is in the process of bringing an Iraqi family from Turkey to Nanaimo for resettlement.  Based upon this experience, Gerry has a deep appreciation for the important work done by CVIMS and very much looks forward to helping with the advancement of our goals and values.

Anthony (Tony) Ogbechie - Member at Large

Anthony Ogbechie is an Investment Consultant with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and has been with CIBC since 2015. He has held a variety of roles in his career and has gained valuable experience managing a large portfolio of clients, building strong relationships and contributing to the community. Anthony has worked with Standard Chartered Bank in 2009 and prior to joining CIBC worked for the Royal Bank of Canada.

Anthony has an MBA from Vancouver Island University and an MSc International Business from University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom. Anthony immigrated to Canada from Nigeria in 2013 as an International Student and lives in Nanaimo, B.C with his wife and daughter. While at VIU Anthony was the graduate student representative in the faculty of Management board where he advocated for student’s interests especially minority groups. Anthony and his family are active members of the community and participate in various events and activities. They also volunteer for organizations that represent their causes.

Anthony is excited to join the Board of Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society and brings immense enthusiasm to the team as he looks to build a more diverse, tolerant and inclusive society.
