Interfaith Nanaimo Announcement

Tuesday, February 27, 2007

Starts promptly at 7:00 pm

Unitarian Fellowship Hall
Townsite Road at Millstone

As February, in our calendar, is known as "The Love Month", the Interfaith Community of Nanaimo invites everyone to attend an evening on Tuesday, February 27th to celebrate the Golden Rule for all the world's religions: that of "loving our neighbours". This is a golden opportunity to meet some of those who "walk the walk and talk the talk" on our behalf in doing just that, every day of the week, every month of the year in Nanaimo. Our panel of six guests features leaders from Foodshare, Habitat for Humanity; Columbian Society for the mentally ill, Salvation Army, 7-10 Club and the Loaves & Fishes food bank.

No entry charge, but please bring a small food snack to share in our chat-break. Questions? Phone 753-8228

Ninth National Metropolis Conference
Exploring Canada's Diversity Today & Tomorrow, March 1-4

Metropolis is an international forum for comparative research and public policy development about population migration, cultural diversity and the challenges of immigrant integration in cities in Canada and around the world. National Metropolis conferences provide a forum for discussion among academic researchers, policy analysts, and representatives of non-governmental organizations that deal with issues of immigration, diversity and social inclusion.

In a world characterized by globalization and transnationalism, Canada faces many opportunities and challenges in the successful integration of newcomers. Our experience of the past 10 years notwithstanding, many old questions require new responses: What is the nature of citizenship in contemporary Canada? What does it mean to be Canadian? And what are the factors influencing 'attachment' and ‘belonging'? What access do newcomers have to resources needed for social, economic, cultural and political integration? What do newcomers need to do to facilitate their integration? How do we promote a just society? What do we expect newcomers to do? What might we do differently tomorrow?

The Executive Director will attend this conference representing island area settlement services. Terre Flowers, our Diversity Coordinator will attend representing provincial diversity and anti-racism programs. Funding for our attendance is provided by Research on Immigration and Integration in the Metropolis, UBC.

Lunar New Year Celebration

Our Lunar New Year Celebration Variety Show was a huge success. More that two hundred people attended this event.

Many thanks to all of the very talented immigrants, local born and the Maxwell International School students for their excellent performances. It was a wonderful opportunity to encourage fellowship and understanding in the Nanaimo community and demonstrated just one of the many gifts that immigrants bring to enrich the Central Island region.

A Visit from the Attorney General

Wally Oppal, Attorney General and the Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism, made his first visit to the CVI Multicultural Society at the end of January.

Following a tour of the office, the Minister participated in an informal dialogue with Executive Director Hilde Schlosar, staff and board members, and several clients of the Society before resuming his busy schedule.

Our ELSA and Settlement program funding is received from his Ministry.
