Job Mentoring Program
The Job Mentoring Program is an initiative to address some of the employment barriers skilled immigrants’ face. The program goal is to provide some direction, guidance and clarity to skilled immigrants by connecting them with locally-trained professionals in their respective occupations.
This program is designed to assist foreign trained professionals to gain valuable information about how to re-enter their careers in Canada. Job Mentors are matched with foreign trained individuals to share their time and expertise and help them learn about their careers in Canada.
Are you ready to be a mentor? Mentors are people who have a combination of knowledge and experience and can bring wisdom to the learning process. They have established themselves in their current roles and likely have a reputation for developing others.
They have well-developed interpersonal skills and are continuous learners. And, most of all, they are comfortable enough with themselves and their role in the process to set their needs aside and focus on the mentee. As a Mentor you will have the opportunity to:
- Share valuable knowledge that you have gained as a result of your own experience; think back to what you know now compared to when you entered the workforce.
- Develop your coaching, communication and leadership skills, which will be transferable to many social, academic and professional situations.
- Gain personal satisfaction through doing something worthwhile.
- Gain the experience of working with people from other backgrounds and cultures.
Are you ready to be a mentee? Mentees are people who have the language, knowledge and experience to succeed in the workplace, but need help getting their foot in the door.
Most of all, mentees are willing to listen, learn and share.
What will you learn from a mentor?
Every mentoring relationship is different, but some of the things you may work on include:
- Understanding Canadian workplace culture
- Identifying skills required by market demands
- Advice on proceeding with accreditation if relevant
- Improving professional terminology
- Mastering self-marketing techniques and confidence-building
- Selecting technical skills upgrading programs and resources
- Locating publications and workshops on recent developments in your field
- Gathering information on local industries and potential employers
- Establishing professional networks
- Identifying employment or job training placement opportunities
Job Placement and Coaching Program
|
“Immigrants don’t just bring their skills;
they bring their whole culture with them.” |
For culturally different employees, once a job has been secured, the challenge "fitting" into the Canadian workforce really begins. Finding a job is simply the first step; keeping it AND positioning oneself for future promotion are even greater challenges.
On the job, new immigrants must adjust to many cultural differences in the workplace: non-verbal and verbal communication, punctuality, manager-employee relations, teamwork, just to name a few! When cultural differences are not clearly understood, the newcomer’s behavior is often misunderstood as “lacking fit”.
Our Job Coach understands many of the common challenges experienced by both the new immigrant and the employer. The Job Placement and Coaching program provides the support to create a successful transition to the Canadian workplace.
