Language is more than communication—it is the foundation for independence, confidence, and belonging. Throughout the year, CVIMS language programs helped newcomers strengthen their English skills while building the confidence to participate fully in work, education, and community life. Whether learners were taking their first steps toward literacy or advancing their language proficiency, each achievement opened new opportunities for connection and success.
KJ participated in CVIMS’ Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program from 2020 to 2021 to improve his English communication skills as a newcomer to Canada.
During the program, KJ also practiced conversational English with a dedicated CVIMS volunteer, Pam. These one-on-one sessions helped him build confidence in speaking English and laid a strong foundation for settling and growing in Nanaimo.
Today, KJ proudly serves the Nanaimo community as a bus driver with the City of Nanaimo. His journey demonstrates how language education and volunteer support can empower newcomers to gain confidence, build meaningful careers, and contribute to their local community.
